Case Studies

The following is a sample of cases where I have helped clients overcome phobias, fear of heights, anxiety, grief, guilt, low self esteem, depression etc.

Phobia of cats - resolved in 2 x 1 hour sessions using NLP and EFT

This client's phobia of cats was having a profound effect on her quality of life and the fear was so great that she could hardly bear to see cats on the television or even in photographs. On occasions the fear was so intense that if a cat was sitting outside her front door she would be unable to leave her flat. During the sessions we regularly checked her levels of distress when thinking about cats and we reduced the problem to very acceptable levels for her. We tested the success level during the sessions and she also reported improvements between the sessions, particularly noticeable if a cat suddenly appeared in front of her in the street. Following the second session she successfully visited a friend with two cats and was able to sit in the same room with them without any difficulty.

Client's comments - "I've had a phobia of cats for at least 10 years, being in close proximity to a cat would cause my heart rate to increase dramatically and I would become tense and very anxious. After a particularly stressful summer I decided to confront my fears and seek some help. I found Brian, to be extremely helpful, the preliminary meeting before the sessions helped put my mind at ease and was an opportunity to ask questions about the use of NLP in overcoming phobias. The sessions were great and I learnt techniques which can be applied to other areas such as anxiety etc. After just two sessions the intense fear has gone and I feel calm and confident when around cats - a huge breakthrough." - D.J. 2006

Fear of heights - resolved in 1 x 2 hour session using NLP and EFT

I have treated clients individually and in groups for their fear of heights and have been running a unique course in the Peak District for over a year, for clients with this fear. I work with clients in the morning and in the afternoon their "cure" is tested when they are taught abseiling by a professionally qualified climber. This is the first time such a course has been run anywhere and so far we have had 100% success. You can see video footage of some recent, exhilirated, particpants at YouTube and hear their comments about the course. Please remember, as you watch the video, that these people were absolutely terrified of heights before the course.

Client's comments - some recent participants gave the following feedback...

Hi Brian,Thanks for the diagram and information. More importantly, a big, big thank you for the session on Saturday morning. I am still trying to rationalize what went on and how it all came togther in such a short space of time. It certainly now allows me to deal much more positively and successfully with the combination of negative feelings triggered by exposure/height etc. Once again, thanks for the mental/emotional workout. Bloody hell,it really does work! - Chris C., 2008

Hi Brian! We had a great day today as well. We didn't go too crazy with the climbing as we were all a bit worn out (apart from Abbi obviously!). I didn't get very far up a v. diff one, but managed the top of the moderate that we did afterwards. I wasn't scared at any point, I just didn't find it much fun on the v. diff when I couldn't feel my hands because of the cold!! My new motto is "I'm not scared"!! I don't know how many times I've said it today, but it's a great feeling to be able to concentrate on achieving new stuff, rather than feeling screwed up about being scared. I've come across NLP quite a lot in my work, and EFT to some extent in my own therapy sessions, but you had a great way of explaining things and a real no nonsense approach that made it really fun to do, as well as getting the desired effect. None of us could get over the way you changed the way we felt so dramatically in just 2 hours! Thanks a lot for doing it and making it fun. I hope our paths cross again in the future and I will certainly recommend the course - I think we sold the two girls, on John's course, on it at dinner last night! All the best, Alison B. Management Consultant, 2008

"I really enjoyed the weekend and still can't believe I abseiled down a sheer rock face, all thanks to you . . . I will continue my exploits and will remind myself of how to overcome the fear, in fact any fear. The NLP and EFT are amazing." Peter N., 2007

"Thanks for a fantastic day on Saturday, I really feel as if I've made some big changes in my life. You were both very patient when things weren't quite going to plan but we got there in the end. The photos you took are very impressive and I've scored brownie points with the kids. Thanks again guys I very much look forward to meeting you both again." Neil

Low Self Esteem - key elements resolved in 2 x 1 hour sessions using NLP and EFT

This client came to me with an initial issue around self-esteem. We spent the first session getting to the heart of the problem using various NLP techniques and found the basis of the problem to be in childhood. One of the key effects of regularly being told she was stupid was that she now felt insecure about speaking up in public meetings. We reframed the early experience and also built in some anchoring techniques to enable her to tap into resourceful, confident states and this enabled her to feel much more at ease in public situations and in meetings in particular. We are continuing to work together on this and other issues and will be using a mixture of NLP and EFT to develop her confidence across a range of situations.

Grief and Guilt - resolved in 1 x 1 hour session using Emotional Freedom Technique

Client's mother died in hospital 20 years previously and he was not at her bedside when she passed away. Despite visiting her every day and being with her the whole night before her death he still felt enormous guilt at having to leave the hospital to get some rest. When he returned a couple of hours later she had already died. In the following days, as executor of her estate, he had no time to grieve and as time passed grieving became more and more difficult.

Initially he felt he could discuss this openly but when he tried to he was unable to do so as the guilt and grief flooded in. We discussed the use of EFT and how there was no need to re-live the sadness of his loss and that by using EFT he could come to a gentle resolution of these very damaging emotions. I talked him through the EFT process and directed him to put his attention on the positive aspects of his relationship with his mother and the very happy times they had enjoyed. A number of different aspects to the guilt problem arose as we went through the EFT process and we tapped on these and step-by-step he realised that he had always done the best he could and realised his mother also knew that.

He suddenly understood that leaving the hospital to rest was filled with positive intention and that his mother understood this and that he could also accept it now. Following the session, while he could still remember her death, he could not tune in to the negative feelings of guilt and also noticed that he had finally grieved properly for his loss. His grief had arisen and dissolved naturally and simultaneously with the resolution of his feelings of guilt. By the end of the session his memories of his mother were positive and life affirming. I spoke to him a couple of months later and he confirmed that he had no further feelings of guilt and the burden of grief had been lifted completely.

My thanks to my clients for giving permission to record their experiences here and for providing testimonials.
