About Tapas Acupressure Technique - Background

Tapas Acupressure Technique was developed in the early 1990's in America by the acupuncturist Tapas Fleming. She trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine and originally focused on the treatment of allergies. Using acupuncture and acupressure she based her early work on the treatment methods of Dr Nevi Nambudripad, a pioneering expert in the field of allergies.

Developing her own innovative methods she initially used TAT to alleviate allergies and chemical sensitivities. As she worked more and more with the technique she began to be influenced by other leading innovators in the field of energy therapy, including Larry Nims. This led her to expanding the technique, applying it to  a wider range of emotional and physical issues. It is used worldwide and is considered to be an extremely effective therapy.

When TAT is used

TAT supports Emotional Wellbeing

TAT can be used on, among many other things, allergies, emotional issues, traumas, phobias, grief and negative or limiting beliefs as well as the emotional bases of physical problems.

It can also be used with groups. For example the Mexican Association for Crisis Therapy currently uses the Tapas Acupressure Technique with groups of people who have experienced natural disasters. These groups range in size from 2 to almost 200 (men, women and children)

How TAT works

One of the most emotionally disabling aspects of self is its potential for creating "parts" within our mind. You will recognize this as the inner argument you have with yourself manifesting as "part of me wants to do this but part of me doesn't" type thinking. This can often be quite straightforward and not present us with much of a problem. However when we cannot make a clear decision about what is the best course of action we may become distressed, perhaps angry, possibly even depressed. This is bad enough when we are conscious of this inner conflict. However if we have experienced very traumatic events we use enormous amounts of energy to keep the memory of these events far from our conscious mind. We try to bury the memory because it is so painful, because we cannot see a better way of dealing with it. This can happen even when that other part of us wants to confront the issue and put it firmly behind us. At this point we are not yet able to understand that these parts can once again be made whole so that all of our energy can once again be used to experience the best that life has to offer.

TAT is a very simple, but extremely powerful, technique that resolves emotional issues using acupressure on the body's meridians in conjunction with specific statements. No needles are used. The fingers of one hand are placed on or over certain acupressure points, while the other hand gently holds the back of the head. While the client is holding this posture he/she is guided to put their attention on a series of statements related to the problem. The TAT pose opens up the internal channels of communication by unblocking energy so that the brain can process all the aspects of the traumatic event and integrate any positive learnings that we need to take from it. This creates a feeling of calm where turmoil existed previously and a sense of wholeness and balance returns to our life. We are then left with a new sense of positive emotional energy.

No analysis of the problem is required by the client or practitioner. It is a very gentle technique, it is very intuitive and it can also be used to treat, and be taught to, children. Once learned the client can use it on other issues as they arise in the future. TAT sessions can also be carried out by telephone.
